Extension to the Scottish Memorial Park in Flanders

About

The Scottish Memorial in Flanders was created in August 2007 to commemorate the soldiers of the 9th and 15th (Scottish) Divisions who died at the Battle of Passchendale in 1917. It is located on the Frezenberg Ridge on the site of the battlefield close to the village of Zonnebeke and the famous town of Ieper (Ypres). For the centenary of the battle next year the organisers are extending the Memorial Park by creating a range of larger than life steel silhouettes in the form of marching Scottish soldiers from highland and lowland regiments. The 'face' of the 2017 campaign will be James Speirs, a noted footballer who played for Glasgow Rangers and Bradford City, for whom he scored the winning goal in the 1911 FA Cup Final. Mr Speirs fell at Passchendaele and is buried in Dochy Farm New British Cemetery. The silhouettes will be unveiled at a Scottish Weekend on 19/20 August 2017 at the Scottish memorial

The Campaign's website can be found by searching for 'The Long Road to Passchendaele' and this will take you to the official website. The campaign is also on Facebook under the same title. Full information about the Scottish Divisions' contribution to the Battle of Passchendaele and the Scottish Memorial can be found there along with details of Mr Speirs.

Any contributions to this worthwhile cause will be very gratefully received.
