The Scottish Lime Centre Trust (SLCT) is a charitable company set up to provide advice, experience and training for the repair of traditional buildings (pre 1919), the majority of which, in Scotland, are of solid walled stone and lime mortar construction. Lime mortars have been used for constructing and finishing (inside and out) solid walls with lime plaster (on lath or on the 'hard') being used inside and harling (roughcast) or flatter renders on the outside of walls and very often limewashed to further protect buildings and to carry decoration.
The SLCT has a Building Advisory Service operated by experienced Building Surveyors, Building Materials Analyst (in our Laboratory) and a stonemason and is able to advise owners, custodians, other building professionals on the appropriate repair of traditional buildings. Allied to this is a comprehensive training and education programme aimed at all three main stakeholders of the historic built environment, that is, owners of traditional buildings, building professionals and building contractors dealing with the repair, conservation, or restoration of traditional buildings.
