Event Details

We are delighted to welcome you to a special evening of talking tartan!

About the Event & Speaker:
Our evening lecture will be presented by Stirling Council Archaeologist, Dr. Murray Cook. Dr. Cook graduated from The University of Edinburgh and has been working in archaeology, heritage, and planning fields for nearly 30 years. He has authored over 40 publications, is an Honorary Research Fellow at Stirling University, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. As Stirling Council's archaeologist he has emphasized learning opportunities for the local community and supported the growth of Stirling's tourism and education sectors. His 2023 excavations at the Wilson's mills in Bannockburn have helped to reveal important information about the stories of the local mill workers and the harsh conditions they lived in. This has provided important context to better understand the growth and development of the Scottish tartan industry. His talk will focus on the past, present, and future of tartan including plans for a new interpretation of Bannockburn's tartan history.

About the Location:
This exclusive event will take place in spectacular Bannockburn House, a Grade A listed mansion once owned by tartan magnate Alexander Wilson. Described as a “rare survivor” of its time, the house has many interesting architectural features including the “Laigh Hall” and the “Blue Room” ceilings, reputed to be the work of Houlbert and Dunsterfield; two highly skilled craftsmen who had been commissioned by Charles II to produce ornate ceilings within Holyrood Palace. The house also played a prominent role in the history of the 1745 Jacobite Rising and boasts a bedroom where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed as he convalesced and planned military campaigns. His bedchamber bears the marks of a recently discovered assassination attempt. Historical tours of the house are available as part of our Tales of Tartan activities and can be booked separately.

Tickets £10, refreshments included.
