In the early years of the Second World War, attacks on shipping fleets threatened Britain’s ability to import food and forestry supplies. Authorities scrambled to respond to this grave threat, enacting ambitious plans to rapidly increase production of these items. In Scotland, this was a huge task in rural communities that had been decimated by land clearances, economic depression, and population decline. Against the odds, the mobilisation of a range of workers enabled Scottish agriculture and forestry to make impressive gains in production. Women played an important part in this war work, helping to feed the people of Britain and produce supplies for the frontline fighting forces.

In this talk, Dr Michelle Moffat will share her research into the valuable contributions made by women workers in wartime rural Scotland. Using newly uncovered archives, this talk will explore the experiences of voluntary workers, the Scottish Women’s Land Army, and the Scottish Women’s Timber Corps.
