Scottish Church Heritage Research

About

SCHR is creating a website of all Scottish places of worship - all faiths. At a time when churches and other faith buildings are closing due to lack of congregations and/or population movement we believe it is important to make a record of these buildings outside and inside. We work mainly with volunteers, though we have had some funding for fieldwork. So far we have recorded Fife, Angus, Aberdeenshire up to and including Moray. Other areas have been photographed: Galloway, Mull, Bute and more. Currently we have a project in Glasgow and a new one in Dundee. Volunteers are needed for other areas.

In addition to recording we hold an annual study day and conference. We also produce a Newsletter once or twice a year. We give talks on aspects of churches and alongside our website, www.scottishchurches.org.uk, we are developing an archive of images, field notes, guidebooks, publications and exhibition material. We are trying to set up a programme with teachers, to help them use local places of worship.
