John Inglis and the Georgian Navy

When & Where

Wednesday, 11 March 2020 - 7:30pm to 9:00pm
Parish Church Hall, St Mary Street, Kirkcudbright, DG6 4DN

Event Details

The speaker at the March meeting will be John Tildesley.

John Inglis was an American who became a British Admiral. The story of his life has several connections with Dumfries and Galloway. His Grandfather had emigrated to Pennsylvania from Dumfriesshire. His father formed a business partnership with Philadelphia businessman David Sproat, who was from Kirkcudbright. Many aspects of his life could appear in a work of fiction: an underage Lieutenant commanding a schooner; hunting smugglers; the Boston Tea Party; dined with George Washington; rescued British customs officials from an angry crowd; and twice crossed the Atlantic in the smallest British Warship of the period. Having inherited his uncle’s Edinburgh estate, he married and settled in Scotland, but always returned to the Navy at the earliest opportunity
