Itinerary is as follows:
11:00 Registration in the Central Methodist Hall at Tollcross, near the southern end of Lothian Road, located at the junction of Earl Grey Street and West Tollcross. Coffee/tea and shortbread will be served.
Note: Parking in the area is very limited. For those arriving by bus from out of town, the best point to alight is around the Shandwick Place/Princes Street junction. From there, it is a 12 or 15 minute walk, or many buses run up Lothian Road.
11:30 - 12.30 Talk by Graeme Cruickshank, providing a brief overview of canals in Scotland, and a more detailed look at the Union Canal.
The talk will then concentrate on the filled-in section of the Canal from its terminus at Port Hopetoun to its present-day beginning at Edinburgh Quay focusing on what has been lost.
12:30 - 13.30 Walk, covering the ground described in the last section of the lecture (a few hundred yards), to see what still remains.
13:30 - 15:00 Cruise, in the canal boat Lochrin Belle, as far as Slateford Aqueduct.
Lunch will be served on board. Toilet facilities are available.
There will be an opportunity to disembark at Slateford for a short time while the boat is turned around.
15:00 - 16:30 Cruise back to Edinburgh Quay (in Fountainbridge).
Participants should have suitable footwear, and be able to walk short distances and board the boats.
Places are very limited and bookings can only be accepted with payment.
