About this Organisation
Located in Sgoil Lionacleit, the community secondary school, on the island of Benbecula Museum nan Eilean(Uist & Barra) opened in 1988 and through temporary exhibitions interprets the history and culture of the Outer Hebrides plus give local people opportunities to see Touring Exhibitions from National Institutions.
Significant loans in the past have included from National Museums Scotland, Great Tapestry of Scotland, Scottish Parliament, Highland Museum of Childhood and items on loan from excavators with permission from Treasure Trove Scotland. These are displayed alongside unique objects from the Comhairle’s Museum nan Eilean collection.
The museum collections cover the whole of the Outer Hebrides including uninhabited islands, but at this location relate primarily to Uist and Barra (while the sister museum in Lewis relates to the islands of Lewis, Harris and Great Bernera.) They include archaeology, social history, photographs, paintings, natural history and other local ephemera.
