Kirkcaldy Civic Society
About this Organisation
Kirkcaldy Civic Society was set up to focus and empower community interest in the recording and conservation of its historical environment, the promotion of quality standards in town planning in Kirkcaldy and the improvement of the civic environment in the future. The Committee meet monthly to plan events and comment on planning issues.
The Society has a large archive of old photographs of the town and has published many books on various areas of Kirkcaldy. Some of these detail the guided walks undertaken by the Society in summer months, while a programme of talks of local interest are held throughout the winter months in Kirkcaldy Old Kirk, Kirk Wynd, KY1 1EH. An annual Hallowe'en Ghost Walk sees notable characters from Kirkcaldy's past returning for one night only to tell their story (courtesy of the Civic Society and the Auld Kirk Players!) The Society also holds a biennial Fife Gravestones Conference and other conferences from time to time e.g. Kirkcaldy and the Whale in 2017, 8th Gravestones Conference in October 2020, and seeks to work in conjunction with other groups with similar aims on these or on exhibitions about Kirkcaldy's past. It was proactive in promoting Doors Open Day in Kirkcaldy and still participates annually over several venues.
