The aim of the Society is to promote the study of family history in the west of Scotland. It has its own Research Centre in Partick which is equipped with a library of books and digital media, a number of computers linked to the Internet with subscriptions to the principal commercial genealogy companies and a team of voluteers on hand to assist with any queries members or guests may have. A journal is issued to all members three times annually and public meetings are held from September to May on a range of topics relating to family history. Membership is worldwide and journals are exchanged with other family history societies across the globe. The Society maintains a website on the internet giving all members access to its facilities. A variety of publications is published by the Society which may be purchased online.
