About this Organisation
Glasgow City Archives are housed in the Mitchell Library and include the official records of various local authorities and a large number of private collections. Explore the rich and fascinating history of Glasgow and the west of Scotland, from the 12th century to the 21st.
Our major holdings include:
- The records of Glasgow City Council and its predecessor authorities, as well as those of Strathclyde Regional Council and some authorities within the former Strathclyde Region
- Architectural plans
- Burial and cremation records
- Business records of all kinds, from large engineering works to small shopkeepers
- Church records, including the Church of Scotland Glasgow Presbytery and seceding churches, Episcopal Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway, and many other churches
- Clyde Navigation Trust
- Family and estate papers covering the west of Scotland
- Maps and plans
- Police records
- Poor relief records
- School records
- Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society
- Shipping and shipbuilding records
- Records of many other clubs, societies, charities, political organisation and individuals
