SCHR , Scottish Church Heritage Research

About

SCHR was set up to develop a list of places of worship in Scotland (any/all faiths), because so many buildings were no longer required and were being sold or demolished, mostly without record.

We began this before computers were suitable, starting with a manuscript list of over 10,000 places of worship. The number is much higher now.

We work with volunteers, though we have had short -term appointments when we received a grant. For the most part we have benefitted from a private donor who covers the rent and a few other items. The office is in Cupar Fife, but volunteers can work in the area where they live. The project is educational and simple. Volunteers take photographs of places of worship, general view, outside and inside (when feasible). We then encourage they write a short text, to provide some historic interest. We record what we can if a church is closed, but do not seek entry in such cases.

Our web site is www.scottishchurches.org.uk. It is free, easy to use and all completed entries can be read. There are many awaiting recording. We can arrange training days, with a site visit, to take photographs, if there is interest.

Other information

We are seeking volunteers who have computer skills, so that they can help develop the project, but also develop specific computer skills. We have a publicity leaflet, but I have not been able to add it to this document.
