The Eve of Prestonpans!
When & Where
Event Details
September 20th 1745: On the eve of the Battle of Prestonpans, the Jacobite High Command under Bonnie Prince Charlie convened at the Sheep Heid Inn at Duddingston to plan out their strategy of attack. The following day they scored a stunning victory over Sir John Cope's redcoats at Prestonpans.
September 20th 2019: We will remember the events of that day at the very inn where the Prince, his officers and men gathered, dined, drank and planned their next move on the eve of the battle.
The wearing of tartan and highland wear as well as lowland clothing would be much appreciated for this special Jacobite historical event, and a warm welcome awaits - although hopefully not quite as warm as the welcome given to Johnny Cope the next day!
The programme:
5:45 PM: John Roy Stuart and the Edinburgh Regiment
6:00 PM: 'Lament for Lady Mackintosh', John Roy's beautiful and timeless elegy to those who die before their time, recorded in Gaelic and English by Brigadier John MacFarlane. former President and Chairman of The 1745 Association
6:05 PM: The arms and armour of the '45
6:20 PM: A soldier's story. The Jacobite Lieutenant General Lord George Murray reflects on his previous encounters with Hanoverian troops, and his concern that his raw highland clansmen will stand firm in the coming battle. Does the young prince Charles Edward Stuart have the ability to command an army? Can we find suitable terrain that would be advantageous for the Highland charge in the coming days?
6:35 PM: Eat, Drink and be Merry (for tomorrow you may die)! The Eve of Prestonpans Supper - details below!
7:20: After-dinner talk - The Story of the Battle of Prestonpans
