The Moray Burial Ground Research Group
About this Organisation
Formed in 2003, the aim of the group is to research every burial ground in Moray, including part of Banffshire for the benefit of local and family historians. We record all known memorials in every churchyard or cemetery being researched, as well as uncovering and recording buried tombstones, which in some cases date back to the 16th century. This work is undertaken with the full co-operation of all the relevant authorities and interested parties.
To date we have published 26 volumes of monumental inscriptions and 6 volumes of our Forgotten Tombstones of Moray series, which include the records of some 800 buried tombstones.
Our website now has well in excess of 80,000 entries and these indices list every person mentioned on all tombstone inscriptions we have published. Already we have helped many people from various parts of the world to trace their ancestors or relations.
If you are interested in promoting the history of generations of Moravians dating back to a time when Scotland was still a kingdom in its own right, we would be delighted to meet you. If you can spare a few hours every month, why not come and help us, you will be made most welcome.
