Douglas Lockhart
THe talk discusses the origins of charity bazaars; their purposes to help fund church; health, sport and other organizations; the venues and decoration of halls; opening speakers, goods on sale, entertainment; the decline of bazaars and their replacement by sales of work, jumble sales and the like. The talk can be tailored to suit area/region in the vicinity eg the North East or take a broader overview. A highly visual topic which is illustrated by a range of original sources.
Robertson was born in Perthshire and moved along with his family to Kincardineshire - in the North East, he was a successful surveyor; farmer, estate manager, expert witness at several Parliamentary inquiries and contributor to the New Statistical Account. His final years were spent managing the Hawarden [North Wales] estate. The talk traces the key moments of his life and is illustrated by a selection of original sources selected from the large surviving record of surveying and day to day correspondence.
