HES has been identifying, surveying and interpreting the built environment in Scotland for over a hundred years. Our archive provides unique insights into Scotland's places, documenting how the national archaeological, industrial and architectural environment has changed over time.

There are more than 5 million items, including photographs, maps, drawings and documents, which can be accessed in our public Search Room or online through our searchable database Canmore.

HES also looks after Scotland's National Collection of Aerial Photography, an archive of over 26 million aerial images from around the world. You can find these images at ncap.org.uk.
