Scottish Fisheries Museum

About this Organisation

Situated in a wonderful collection of historic buildings on the harbour of a small and beautiful fishing port, we are a charitable trust which has become a national institution with an international reputation.

The museum tells the story of Scottish fishing and its people from the earliest times to the present. Our displays focus on three core themes: Boats (how they were developed to suit the fish and the waters where they operated), fish (the species caught, their habitats and their importance as food) and folk (the distinctive and resilient communities involved in the fishing industry). Our galleries show our extensive collections, including many paintings, model boats and domestic items as well as tools and equipment. There is plenty for children to do as they explore the life of a fisherman or fisherlass.

We host temporary exhibitions, activities, events, learning programmes and operate two boats that visit harbours around the coast. We also have a research library and archive open to the public by appointment, a welcoming tearoom and interesting shop stocking numerous books and gifts.
