The Falkland Society
About
The Falkland Society, a Scottish Registered Charity, exists to promote knowledge and understanding of the archaeological, architectural, historic and artistic heritage, past and present, of Falkland, and its wider context in Fife and Scotland.
Our season of monthly meetings normally runs from September to June. All are welcome, whether members or not. Our lecturers have covered subjects such as local history, architecture, archaeology, heraldry, crafts, conservation, and the landscape. From June 2020 onwards our meetings have been held online via Zoom and have been recorded.
The Society publishes books about Falkland and its history. Our most recent publication, Falkland and its People 1901–1913 gives a fascinating picture of life in Falkland in the years before the Great War. A little Scottish town proud of its status as a Royal Burgh, with its Provost and Town Council. Most of the places mentioned are still recognisable today, but the social hierarchy, vividly brought to life in these pages, now seems like a different world. Hardback, 560 pages, 62 illustrations and 4 maps. £20 plus postage and packing.
As well as our own website we maintain the Historic Falkland website, with articles of interest about the history and heritage of our town, and Falkland Historic Buildings, a Wikipedia-style encyclopaedia of the buildings of Falkland, which already covers much of the Royal Burgh and the Conservation Areaand is planned to extend it to the whole historic Parish of Falkland, including Newton of Falkland and Freuchie.
